The Ten Second Rule

A friend of mine gave me this book, The 10-Second Rule: Following Jesus Made Simple, and told me it was a must read.  After reading it, I agree completely.  It’s a short read, simple, easy to read and comprehend, and incredibly challenging.  The premise is this: when you feel a prompting by the Holy Spirit to do something, do it in the next ten seconds.  That’s the rule.

I believe many times we tend to overcomplicate what Christianity is all about.  At Southview, we’ve tried to keep it simple – we’re asking people to commit to loving God (worship), growing (spiritually and together in community), and serving other people in Jesus’ name.  When it comes to serving others, how do you do that?  When do you do that?  This books speaks to both of those questions.

What a powerfully simple decision, to become more attentive to the Spirit of God and to grow in our obedience to His voice.  SCCers know I say this often – following Jesus is about listening to the voice of God and doing what He says.  This book is a tremendous tool to help us learn to do just that.  As De Graaf puts it, it’s “a call to rediscover the revolutionary power of simple obedience as Jesus taught it and the early church lived it, before religious Christianity tamed it! It’s following Jesus made simple.”
