Realizing your potential as a leader is your responsibility. –John C. Maxwell
One of the greatest things you can do for a young person is to tell them you see potential in them.
I remember that happening to me when I was in middle school. A teacher remarked to me the potential she saw in me and encouraged me to work harder, to push myself more, and to read beyond my comfort zone. It’s been over thirty years ago now, but I’ve never forgotten that conversation!
Potential is a powerful word to hear when you are young. But what about when you’re older?
Can you imagine someone saying, “I saw potential in you back then – what happened?”
Unrealized potential is the field where regrets grow.
The quote by John Maxwell above is one that has been a driver in my life for many years now. “Realizing your potential as a leader is YOUR responsibility.” No one else’s.
Weak people cast blame. They want to play the victim. It’s always someone else’ fault.
“They got the breaks – I didn’t.”
“They were lucky – I wasn’t.”
“They knew the right people – I didn’t.”
Catalytic leaders know the truth.
Winston Churchill, who was the British Prime Minister during World War II, said, “Continuous effort – not strength or intelligence – is the key to unlocking our potential.”
It’s up to you, leader.
Will you attain your potential?
I believe you are designed by God on purpose and for a purpose. To know your design and your purpose and to achieve it is the greatest source of satisfaction I know.
There is a famous quote that has been attributed to Mark Twain, though most now doubt that he was the source. “There are two great days in a person’s life—the day we are born and the day we discover why.” Regardless of who originated it, there is much truth there.
How are you designed? What is your purpose?
And what are you doing to unlock your potential?
As a leadership coach, I help leaders discover their potential and how to maximize it. Through coaching, I believe leaders can achieve results. I’ve certainly seen that to be true in my own leadership journey, and in my practice with coaching clients.
